The University of Vermont Honors College offers talented and committed students the intellectual opportunity of a lifetime. A residential college enrolling some of the most capable students from the full spectrum of academic programs at the University of Vermont, the Honors College provides students a rigorous, multi-disciplinary academic challenge that complements and enriches the entire undergraduate experience. Honors students are admitted into the joint program and do honors work with students from all departments on campus in their first two years. Established in , the Honors program brings together a small group of students from throughout CALS who seek additional academic challenges and opportunities to think critically across traditional academic boundaries. The centerpiece of the program is the senior honors thesis, a substantial, original, independent, scholarly work which is completed under the direction of an advisor within the student's major.

Each year, a select group of approximately 15 first-year students are invited to participate in the Honors College program. During your first year, an HCOL academic advisor works with you as your navigate the transition from high school to college and begins an ongoing conversation with you about your academic interests and future career goals. The same advsior works with students in their second year to discuss choice of major, career goals, and plans for study abroad when appropriate.

Students are encouraged to seek mentoring relationships with faculty in their home colleges early in their second year; those faculty relationships form the basis of a great deal of HCOL-related Junior and Senior-year advising when the focus is on preparation for and then execution of the Senior Thesis project. Students in the Honors College will often find that advisors in the Fellowships, Opportunities, and Undergratuate Reearch office are enormously valuable throughout their career at UVM, but in particular during the final two years. And students are, of course, welcome to seek advice from HCOL staff at any time during their time in the Honors College.

Honors College Advising

She is available for advising and support on developing an academic success strategy, finding opportunities for engagement outside the classroom, choice of major, and career goals. Through individualized, holistic advising, he supports students to explore and bring clarity to their academic, cocurricular, and vocational interests and goals; connect with resources all across campus; and secure mentors in their home colleges.

Who Can Submit

Scott also advises students on how to fit study abroad into their HCOL courses of study. He is also a resource for HCOL juniors this year. The Associate Dean oversees the first year curriculum and expectations related to the completion of the senior thesis. Peer Mentors are current Honors College upperclass students who work closely with first years as they navigate the transition to college and life in Honors College.
